The Death of the 9-to-5: How Gen Z Is Using AI and Flexible Work to Build ‘Portfolio Careers’

The traditional career ladder is officially being replaced by something far more dynamic. Instead of climbing a linear path within a single company, Gen Z professionals are hopping across “career lily pads”—building multi-stream portfolio careers powered by artificial intelligence, side hustles, and a refusal to waste hours in traffic.

New global data from International Workplace Group (IWG) highlights a massive generational pivot in how young professionals approach work. Facing economic pressures, inflation, and rapid technological shifts, today’s emerging workforce is prioritizing autonomy, earning power, and adaptability over corporate loyalty.

Moving Beyond the Single Paycheck

For Gen Z, financial security no longer means relying on a single employer. One-third of young workers surveyed already maintain or are actively planning a side hustle, primarily driven by rising living costs and student debt.

However, this shift isn’t just about survival—it’s about future-proofing. Rather than fearing AI, 55% of Gen Z workers view automated tools as a catalyst to diversify their skill sets and launch multiple income streams.

This trend is echoed locally in Australia, where LinkedIn data shows that 56% of Gen Z entrepreneurs now maintain multiple streams of income. Crucially, the motivation behind this isn’t purely financial: nearly 60% cite personal freedom and control over their time as their primary driver, outpacing the desire for wealth alone.

As AI takes over repetitive technical tasks, human-centric capabilities such as strategic creativity, adaptability, and nuanced leadership are becoming the ultimate career currency.

The Strategy of ‘Career Lily Pads’

The days of staying at a company for decades are fast becoming ancient history. Job mobility among younger workers is high: 43% of Gen Z professionals have changed roles two or three times in the last three years, with 30% pointing directly to salary growth as their main motivator.

Instead of waiting years for incremental promotions, young professionals are strategically moving between projects, roles, and industries to maximize their earning potential and adapt to financial realities like soaring rent and loan repayments.

Why the Commute Is a Dealbreaker

If there is one thing Gen Z agrees on, it is that the traditional long commute is dead.

An overwhelming 65% of young workers state they would be far less likely to pursue entrepreneurship or side ventures if forced to travel long distances to an office every day.

Flexible and hybrid working models are the key enablers of this new economic model. By cutting out hours spent in transit, young professionals reclaim vital time to invest in upskilling, personal projects, or launching secondary businesses. In Australia, 93% of hybrid workers now rank access to a local workspace as a top priority when job hunting, while 81% report that working locally saves them an average of $236 per month.

As IWG’s Country Manager for Australia, Lisia Roth, notes, young professionals are actively adapting to an AI-driven market by upskilling and building broader value propositions. By working closer to home, they gain the time and flexibility needed to collaborate, innovate, and unlock entirely new career paths.

Ultimately, the rise of portfolio careers signals a permanent cultural change: Gen Z isn’t just adapting to the future of work—they are actively rewriting the rules.
