The gaming industry is witnessing a significant transformation, with female gamers making up an increasingly large portion of the player base. As highlighted in “The Xsolla Report: The State of Play,” the future of the gaming industry is not only inclusive but also diverse, driven by the engagement and participation of female gamers.

One key trend identified in the report is the rise of female gamers, particularly among Gen Z and Gen Alpha. These digital-native generations are characterized by their preference for interactive, socially connected, and player-generated content. Female gamers are actively shaping these trends, contributing to the growing popularity of social gaming platforms like Twitch and YouTube. These platforms foster community interactions and provide a space where female gamers can connect, share experiences, and build their own gaming communities.

The report says: “In Q2 2024, of the 83% of internet users worldwide who play games, 91% of female internet users aged 16-24 played video games on any device – almost matching the 92.4% of male respondents in the same age group.”

“The convergence of AI and cloud gaming is revolutionising the industry, making high-quality gaming experiences more immersive, scalable, and accessible than ever before,” said Chris Hewish, Chief Strategy Officer at Xsolla. “AI is streamlining development and enhancing player engagement, while cloud gaming is removing hardware barriers, allowing more players to connect seamlessly while providing alternative payment models like pay-as-you-go for users. This technological shift isn’t just shaping the future – it’s defining it.”

The democratisation of game development has opened new opportunities for women in the gaming industry. With accessible game development tools, more female creators are emerging, using their unique perspectives to address community challenges and drive meaningful social engagement through gaming. This shift not only empowers female gamers but also enriches the gaming landscape with diverse voices and stories.

The report underscores the importance of inclusivity in the gaming industry, recognising that the future of gaming lies in embracing and celebrating diversity. As the industry continues to evolve, female gamers and developers will play a pivotal role in shaping the trends and opportunities that define the gaming world.

Games For Change

Susanna Pollack, President of Games for Change, says we can expect to see a new generation of changemakers through gaming. “One of the interesting trends we’ve seen in gaming is a shift from consumption to active creation powered by in-game development tools,” she said in the report. “Platforms like Minecraft, Roblox, and Unreal Editor for Fortnite are revolutionizing how people engage with games by empowering them to be creators, lowering boundaries to content creation, and enabling more diverse voices to tell their stories through this medium.

“As these tools become more accessible, a new generation of changemakers will emerge-young creatorswho naturally turn to games as a medium for addressing community challenges

This democratization of game development signals an exciting future for social impact gaming. As these tools become more accessible, a new generation of changemakers will emerge-young creators who naturally turn to games as a medium for addressing community challenges. At Games For Change, we are actively supporting this evolution….Looking ahead , as this collaborative, creative-driven ecosystems expands, our focus must remain on ensuring these spaces remain inclusive and purposeful while maintaining what makes games powerful – their innate ability to engage and inspire through play.”
