Step aside Sydney-Siders! Adelaide is shimmying into the (literal and proverbial) spotlight. Vying with Vivid for the position of Australia’s best light show! And, the best bit is that a brilliant woman is transforming the City of Churches into a piece of heaven on earth. Here’s how Rachael Azzopardi is shaping the soul of South Australia into a spectacular fusion of art, light and music.
Rachael Azzopardi: A recap
As a seasoned professional whose career spans continents and prestigious cultural events, there really was no doubt that Rachael Azzopardi would shine in her role as Co-founder and Creative Director of Illuminate Adelaide.
She gained her experience during her educational years at the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide. After which, she embarked on a journey that saw her orchestrating events for the Sydney Theatre Company, contributing to international musical theatre productions and curating performances on Broadway and the West End. Her return to Adelaide in 2018 marked a pivotal moment. A homecoming infused with a desire to create something bold and unprecedented for her beloved city.
“I wanted to create a new event for Adelaide highlighting the amazing work being done across the creative industries,” says Rachael. “One focusing on art, light and technology. And bring that out into the public realm.”
Lights on… and off … and on again!
Of all the industries affected by COVID, the live entertainment one was among the hardest hit. And, Illuminate Adelaide was not spared the problems associated with a global pandemic. The inaugural launched in 2021. Amidst the backdrop of a virus that brought the world to its feet, and posed unforeseen obstacles in the process.
“When Lee (Cumberlidge, Co-Founder and Creative Director) and I started the event at no time did we think COVID would still be around us,” reflects Rachael. “Instead, we felt that we had been given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. One we had worked so hard at making happen! Not only was it challenging enough to deliver a brand-new major event and get it up and on, but we also had the worst storms that SA had had in over 20 years on our opening night of City Lights. And the second Covid lockdown in SA during the first week of our event!” says Rachael.
“We had been running for four days when a seven-day lockdown plunged us into uncertainty! We had to cancel most of our program and refund over 40,000 tickets to our events. And, had no idea when and if we would come out of lockdown!”
It was a test of resilience and adaptability. But one that Rachael passed with flying colours. Successfully navigating financial uncertainties, managing stakeholder expectations and supporting a team amidst uncertainty became daily priorities. This unwavering dedication coupled with community support has allowed Illuminate Adelaide to emerge in its third year, more triumphant than ever.
Collaboration, community and creative empowerment
Central to Illuminate Adelaide’s success is its ethos of collaboration. The festival has fostered partnerships across government, cultural institutions, artists and the business community.
“We make sure we communicate with each group and spend time understanding their priorities. And, how they can align with our vision for Illuminate Adelaide,” says Rachael.
This year, as Illuminate Adelaide prepares for its upcoming edition, the excitement is palpable. With Rachael hinting at some of the innovative installations that guests can expect.
“EDEN by Berlin Studio flora&faunavisions is a definite highlight. The company has adapted their project Utopian Garden, specifically for Illuminate Adelaide. They have created a beautiful, fun and rich interactive artwork. One that evokes a true sense of wonder as you interact with the mythical garden – to plant seeds and grow plants through movement and gameplay.”
Other highlights are expected to include Grand Mix by Inook from France, projected on the facade of the Art Gallery of South Australia as part of the free City Lights program, featuring some of the gallery’s works from their Renaissance Reimagined exhibition.
“It will use the latest in AI deep fake technology to bring the portraits alive. Making them sing and dance along to pop hits!” reveals Rachael.
Reflecting on her journey, Rachael offers advice to aspiring creatives and event organisers. Particularly women, aiming to make an impact in their communities.
“I believe that we are the driver of our own path,” she says. “No matter how big or small your goal, you can get there if you truly believe in what you are doing and communicate that with those around you who need to come on board with you. If you don’t back yourself then how can you motivate others around you to do so!”
