Want to find the perfect meaningful gift without breaking the bank this Christmas? New research from eBay reveals that ‘nostalgic gifting’ is quickly becoming one of this season’s biggest trends.

Almost two-thirds (61%) of Aussies have said they would consider buying a retro gift this Christmas, showing a growing preference for items that evoke cherished memories. Nostalgic presents are also often seen as more affordable – especially when pre-loved – while still being thoughtful.

For those looking for the perfect retro gift this Christmas, the top nostalgic presents include toys and games like LEGO, Hot Wheels, and Twister (36%), as well as collectible dolls such as Barbie, Bratz, and Beanie Babies (34%). Video games and consoles like the Nintendo 64, PlayStation 1 & 2, and Gameboy are also popular choices (33%), along with record players and vinyl records (22%) and Polaroid or digital cameras (20%).

These nostalgic gifts are especially gaining popularity among younger generations, with Gen Z (79%) and Millennials (74%) leading the charge. Many are drawn to 80s items, with 35% of Aussies wanting to receive a gift from this golden era of video games, including classics like Pac-Man and Super Mario.

You can find a great selection of retro gifts on eBay. eBay Australia’s Zannie Abbott says, “Since arriving in Australia 25 years ago, eBay has connected Aussies with shared passions, from pre-loved fashion to vintage collectables. We’ve seen a clear shift toward retro items, particularly with Gen Z leading the trend. Nostalgic gifts offer something unique and thoughtful, whether they bring back memories or reflect current trends.”

Overall, nostalgic gifts are providing a meaningful and budget-friendly way to conquer gift shopping this Christmas!
