From Playlists to Pilates: Spotify’s Massive Pivot into Fitness Tech

I am currently writing this from Paraty, Brazil, somewhere between a magnificent lodge-to-lodge horse trek and my third plate of pão de queijo. We are wrapping up our two-month South American adventure, and let me tell you, my “wellness routine” on the road has mostly consisted of checking my Oura ring to confirm that I am, indeed, exhausted.

Usually, my Spotify app is strictly reserved for carefully curated travel playlists or drowning out the chaotic symphony of regional airports. But lately, as my saddle-sore muscles protest every movement, I’ve been desperately wishing for a pocket-sized Pilates instructor to just tell me what to do.

Turns out, Spotify is one step ahead of me.

For nearly two decades, the streaming app has been the soundtrack to our workouts. Now, it wants to be the workout itself.

Spotify’s Massive Pivot into Fitness Tech

In a major expansion that merges the worlds of audio tech and holistic health, Spotify has officially launched a new Fitness hub, bringing guided workout experiences directly into the same ecosystem as your favourite music, podcasts, and audiobooks.

The launch represents a massive shift for the streaming giant, transforming it into a true daily wellness companion. And the move wasn’t pulled out of thin air, it’s entirely data-driven. Spotify noted that nearly 70% of its Premium users already work out monthly, driving over 150 million active fitness playlists globally. In fact, fitness has become one of the top use cases for Spotify’s recently launched AI Prompted Playlist feature.

What’s New for Listeners?

The new fitness category is designed to make your time on the app feel more intentional, offering tools to help you get motivated, recover, and reset.

  • A Powerhouse Peloton Partnership: This is the headline grabber for Australian Premium users. As part of your existing subscription, you now have access to a continuously growing catalogue of over 1,400 ad-free, on-demand workout classes from Peloton’s top instructors. The classes span strength, cardio, yoga, and meditation—and the best part? No specialised equipment (like the famous bike) is required.
  • Leading Female Wellness Creators: Both Free and Premium users can tap into dozens of curated playlists and video content from established wellness creators. The lineup is heavily female-led, featuring massive digital names like Yoga With Kassandra, Chloe Ting, Sweaty Studio, Pilates Body By Raven, and Caitlin K’eli Yoga.

“Today, we are expanding Spotify to become a true daily wellness companion,” says Roman Wasenmüller, VP, Global Head of Podcasts at Spotify. “We are investing in a future where Spotify isn’t just where you spend your time—it’s where you go to build momentum, improve your wellbeing, and get more out of every day.”

Ready to break a sweat (or just stretch out after a long flight)? You can check out the new features by simply opening the Spotify app and searching “fitness” to explore curated classes and playlists like Sweat-Free Workouts and Quick Core Workouts.
