Liz Courtney, Director of ‘Antarctica: The Giant Awakens’

Directed by Sydney Film Maker Liz Courtney for the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), this groundbreaking film unveils the critical impact of sea-level rise in our region as temperatures surge, particularly at the Earth’s icy extremities. Under the visionary leadership of Prof Benjamin Horton, Director of EOS, and featuring the groundbreaking insights of emerging female scientists Dr Fangyi Tan and Assoc Prof Jennifer Walker, the film delves into the alarming realities of Antarctica’s thaw. From warming oceans, the rate of melt to the intricate impacts of atmospheric rivers and microbial colonisation in this remote expanse, “Antarctica the Giant Awakens” ignites crucial conversations about our changing climate system and the need for rapid change.

An enlightening Q&A panel featuring esteemed scientists,  Prof Lesley Hughes, Prof Sharon Robinson, and Dr Alex Carthey will allow conversation to turn to the innovation in technology, thought leadership and what we can do from a community and business perspective to be part of the change needed in the world now. As we approach Earth Day on Monday, April 21st, it’s crucial to understand the reality of Antarctica’s status as one of the most pressing existential threats to our region.
